CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST)
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) should be avoided because:
- Departed from biblical authority and inerrancy
- Fully embraces LGBTQ+ clergy and same-sex marriage
- Denies exclusive salvation through Christ
- Progressive political alignment
- No confession of faith required - 'no creed but Christ' interpreted liberally
- Uses virtue signaling language throughout materials
Per "How to Find a Courageous Church": This denomination has abandoned orthodox Christianity.
For faithful Restoration Movement churches, consider Independent Christian Churches or Churches of Christ instead.
DENOMINATION BACKGROUND
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) emerged from the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement in early 19th century America. The movement sought to restore New Testament Christianity and unite all Christians.
Over time, the movement split into three main groups: the Churches of Christ (most conservative, a cappella worship), the Independent Christian Churches, and the Disciples of Christ (most liberal).
The Disciples of Christ formally organized as a denomination in 1968 and has consistently moved in a progressive direction on social and theological issues.
- 1968: Formal denominational organization
- 1970s: Began ordaining women
- 2000s: Many congregations became LGBTQ+-affirming
- 2013: General Minister openly supported same-sex marriage
- Current: Fully progressive on LGBTQ+ issues
- Barton W. Stone (1772-1844): Co-founder of Restoration Movement
- Alexander Campbell (1788-1866): Co-founder of Restoration Movement
- Sharon Watkins: First female General Minister (2005-2017)
- Teresa Hord Owens: Current General Minister
Note: These churches have departed from orthodox Christianity:
- National City Christian Church (Washington DC) - Historic congregation
- First Christian Church (various cities) - Common naming convention
For orthodox alternatives, seek Independent Christian Churches.
